If you asked me for the best Italian spots in Kansas City, I would list three. One of them would be Cupini’s. They make their pasta fresh in-house and I’ll be honest, I’m sure their pizza and panini are great but I’ve been going there for years and I’ve literally never tried them because their pasta is so incredible.

It’s a no-frills spot on 43rd, just off State Line. You hope for street parking because they have a lot but it’s tiny, almost always full, and also mostly comprised of pot holes, but don’t let that stop you. You order at the deli counter, take a number, get your own utensils and drinks, and bus your own dishes when you’re done. Their lasagna is six layers, smothered in sauce, and a personal favorite, though I’ve never been disappointed by their ravioli. If you’re not in the mood for a filled pasta, they have a “build your own” option where you can choose your pasta shape, sauce, and protein. You can grab pasta to make at home from one of their fridges or get a bottle of limoncello (made in house, of course).

Nineteen times out of twenty when I get dessert it’s their tiramisu, which is the best in the city (though if someone wants to recommend a contender I’m always happy to try more). That one time out of twenty, their other selections don’t disappoint.

Their dining room is split by a little alley, and tucked up behind it is a lovely patio. The one critique I have is that their seating—creaky benches and hard wooden chairs—isn’t the most comfortable. It’s not bad for a quick lunch, but dinners tend to be three-hour affairs in my social circles. Because of that, Cupini’s is primarily a take-out spot for me. And they make it quick and easy—if you order online you can head straight for the kitchen door, give them the name on your order, and be back on your way so fast that I don’t even bother to put my car keys back in my pocket or purse when I go.

Some day I’m going to manage to try a sandwich off their menu, and I’ll report back.
